Pizza 4P’s Sustainability Strategy
The Challenge
Pizza 4P's is not a typical restaurant chain. Founded on the philosophy of 'Delivering Wow, Sharing Happiness,' the company sought to become a transformative force within the food and beverage industry. The challenge was to develop a comprehensive sustainability strategy aligned with their core mission, 'For Peace,' and drive impactful change on a global scale.
This meant going beyond operational efficiency. Pizza 4P's wanted sustainability woven into the fabric of their identity, from energy and water management to biodiversity, regenerative agriculture, and community development. At the center of it all: the pursuit of happiness as both a guiding principle and an actionable outcome.
Applying SiD
The project commenced in September 2023 with an intensive engagement process. Except worked closely with Pizza 4P's leadership, including both CEOs (Masuko and Sanae), Sustainability Manager Thu, CFO Bui Tuong Anh, and Except's CEO Tom Bosschaert and Vietnam Country Director Chi Nguyen.
The approach followed SiD's structured methodology:
- Team Training: Equipping the leadership team with knowledge and tools to drive sustainable change, grounding them in SiD's systemic thinking
- Data and Trend Analysis: Building robust datasets and conducting comprehensive analyses of market trends and sustainability precedents
- Stakeholder Engagement: Mapping and analyzing the influence of various stakeholders, integrating their perspectives into the strategy
- Market Analysis: Assessing current and future market conditions to identify opportunities and risks across the F&B landscape
The Co-creation Workshop
Several months of joint data collection, analysis, and preparation fed into a three-day co-creation workshop in Ho Chi Minh City. Key stakeholders from the 4P's core strategy team collaborated intensively on the roadmap's structure and priorities.
This marked the initial phase of applying SiD's holistic approach, integrating systems thinking into the sustainability strategy. The workshop produced not just a plan but a shared language and understanding. By mapping the connections between energy use, supply chains, agricultural practices, community relationships, and employee wellbeing, the team could see how interventions in one area create cascading benefits across others.
Outcomes
The project delivered a 15-year sustainability roadmap covering:
- Energy and water management strategy
- Biodiversity and regenerative agriculture programs
- Circular material flows and waste reduction
- Community development initiatives
- Happiness metrics as core performance indicators
The outcome is a strengthened core strategy used to tap into new development pathways and messaging. The roadmap touches all aspects of operations, providing a management implementation framework for the multi-year development plan.
A core theme throughout was the pursuit of happiness, both as a guiding principle and as an actionable outcome. By embedding this ethos into their sustainability framework, Pizza 4P's aims to inspire joy and wellbeing through their business practices, making 'For Peace' more than a name. The journey towards sustainability is a continuous process of learning, adaptation, and innovation, and Pizza 4P's commitment to this journey exemplifies leadership in the industry.
