The SiD Documentary

This documentary introduces the Symbiosis in Development framework through real-world examples and interviews. It shows what happens when systemic thinking meets sustainability practice: how projects move beyond minimizing harm toward creating regenerative systems.

The film covers the core SiD principles (Resilience, Autonomy, and Harmony), demonstrates how the ELSI-8 domains interact in real projects, and illustrates why integrated sustainability requires looking at the whole system rather than optimizing individual parts.

What to Watch For

As you watch, pay attention to:

  • Systems connections. Notice how changes in one domain (e.g., infrastructure) create ripple effects across others (economy, ecology, livelihood).
  • The shift from linear to systemic. Where do the examples move beyond single-issue sustainability toward integrated approaches?
  • Regenerative outcomes. Look for moments where the goal is not "less bad" but genuinely restorative, creating net positive impact.
  • Scale. How do the projects work across different scales, from local communities to regional systems?

After watching, use the exercise below to reflect on what you have seen and connect it to the SiD concepts from the Foundation layer.

Exercise

Reflect and Apply

  1. After watching the documentary, what concept or idea surprised you the most? Why did it challenge your existing understanding of sustainability?
  2. The documentary presents sustainability as a design challenge rather than a sacrifice. How does this reframing change your emotional response to sustainability work?
  3. Identify one concrete example from the documentary that you could apply in your own context. What would the first step look like?
