March 2026. The complete SiD learning platform is now free and open to everyone. 59 units, video lectures, exercises with AI feedback, and three guided learning paths, all at no cost.
From $60 to Free
For years, the SiD methodology was available exclusively through paid courses on FutureLearn and Udemy, costing around $60 per enrollment. That changes today. We have rebuilt the entire curriculum from the ground up and made it permanently free on thinksid.org.
This is not a trial, not a freemium teaser. Every video lecture, every reading, every exercise, and every community response is open to all. The SiD framework is open source and its education should be too.
What You Get
The rebuilt platform includes:
- 59 learning units across five layers: Foundation, Theory, Method, Process, and Toolbox
- Video lectures by Tom Bosschaert, founder of the SiD framework, covering systems thinking, sustainability theory, and the complete five-step method
- Structured exercises with every unit: quizzes, reflective questions, and applied challenges
- Podcast audio from interviews and case discussions woven into the relevant units
- Real case studies from projects in Western Australia, TU Delft, and rural India
- Three learning paths: The Essentials (8 units for leaders), The Practitioner (18 units for consultants), and The Complete Program (59 units for full mastery)
- Certificates in Bronze, Silver, and Gold for path completion
Guided Learning Paths
Rather than a flat list of content, the platform organizes learning into structured paths with clear sections. Each path has a table of contents, progress tracking, and a logical sequence that builds understanding step by step.
The Complete Program, for example, walks you through Foundation concepts, deep Theory (systems thinking, SNO hierarchy, ELSI domains, RAH indicators, network parameters), the five-step Method, real-world Process design, and a full Toolbox of practical instruments, with case studies interspersed where they make the most sense.
Meet Carl: Your AI Tutor
For those who want deeper engagement, we have built an AI tutor named Carl. Inspired by Carl Sagan's ability to make complex science accessible and wondrous, Carl provides Socratic feedback on your exercise responses, engages in dialogue about the material, and adapts to your learning journey.
Carl does not grade. He asks questions. He challenges assumptions. He connects your answers to the broader framework. When you write a reflection on systems thinking, Carl might ask: "You mention feedback loops. What would happen if you removed the delay from that loop?" This is education as conversation, not evaluation.
Carl is available with a one-time Support payment (from $20), which also unlocks official certification. The entire course content remains free regardless. Carl is there for learners who want a thinking partner, not a grading machine.
Why We Did This
The world does not need another paywall between people and the knowledge required to address its most pressing challenges. Sustainability is not a luxury subject. It is a survival skill. The SiD framework represents over two decades of research and practice in integrated sustainable development. Keeping it behind a $60 enrollment fee was always a compromise.
The Except Integrated Sustainability Foundation, which stewards the SiD framework, is funded by individual supporters and donors. If you find value in this platform, consider supporting it so it can remain free for everyone.
