From $60 to Free
For years, the SiD methodology was available exclusively through paid courses on FutureLearn and Udemy, costing around $60 per enrollment. That changes today. We have rebuilt the entire curriculum from the ground up and made all learning content permanently free on thinksid.org.
Every video lecture, every reading, every exercise question, and every community response is open to all. No paywall, no trial period, no email gate. The SiD framework is open source and its education should be too.
What Is Free
All learning content is free, forever:
- 59 learning units across five layers: Foundation, Theory, Method, Process, and Toolbox
- Video lectures by Tom Bosschaert, founder of the SiD framework, covering systems thinking, sustainability theory, and the complete five-step method
- Full written content for every unit, derived from the SiD book and FutureLearn course materials
- Structured exercises with every unit: quizzes, reflective questions, and applied challenges
- Podcast audio from interviews and case discussions woven into the relevant units
- Real case studies from projects in Western Australia, TU Delft, and rural India
- Three learning paths: The Essentials (8 units), The Practitioner (18 units), and The Complete Program (59 units)
- Community responses: read what other learners wrote for each exercise

What the Support Tier Adds
For learners who want more depth, a one-time support donation of $20 unlocks two additional features for three months:
- Carl, your AI tutor: personalized Socratic feedback on every exercise you submit. Carl does not grade. He asks questions, challenges assumptions, and connects your answers to the broader framework. Inspired by Carl Sagan's ability to make complex science feel like wonder, not homework.
- Official SiD certificates: complete a learning path, lock your best answers, and download a designed PDF certificate verified online. Available in Bronze (Essentials), Silver (Practitioner), and Gold (Complete Program) tiers.
The support donation keeps the platform running. It is not a paywall for the content itself.
Guided Learning Paths
Rather than a flat list of content, the platform organizes learning into structured paths with clear sections. Each path has a table of contents, progress tracking, and a logical sequence that builds understanding step by step.
The Complete Program, for example, walks you through Foundation concepts, deep Theory (systems thinking, SNO hierarchy, ELSI domains, RAH indicators, network parameters), the five-step Method, real-world Process design, and a full Toolbox of practical instruments, with case studies interspersed where they make the most sense.
Why We Did This
The world does not need another paywall between people and the knowledge required to address its most pressing challenges. Sustainability is not a luxury subject. It is a survival skill. The SiD framework represents over two decades of research and practice in integrated sustainable development. Keeping it behind a $60 enrollment fee was always a compromise.
